Honoring Dr. Herbert

The Dr. Barbara Herbert Award

The Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Society of Addiction Medicine (MASAM) announces the creation of the annual Dr. Barbara Herbert Award.

About Dr. Herbert

Barbara Arnold Herbert, born in 1943, was a passionate advocate for social justice, beginning her activism with Students for a Democratic Society in anti-war efforts and co-founding the St Mark’s Women’s Health Collective, the oldest lesbian clinic in the U.S. After coming out as a lesbian, she earned her MD from SUNY Stony Brook in 1980 and dedicated her career to addiction treatment, working at several hospitals and clinics across the country. A key leader at MASAM, Dr. Herbert fought for better care for the vulnerable, reduced stigma around mental illness and addiction, and advanced overdose prevention initiatives. Her advocacy shaped state legislation, earning her multiple awards, including the MMS Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Herbert passed away in 2022, but her legacy continues through an annual MASAM award honoring members who embody her commitment to justice and care.
