MASAM Joins Over 100 Organizations in Supporting Life-Saving Substance Use Legislation

09.13.2024

We are proud to announce that MASAM is one of the many organizations to sign the open letter to legislators, urging them to prioritize and pass critical substance use legislation this fall. This legislation could make a substantial impact in saving lives and supporting recovery efforts across the state.

Earlier today, the Massachusetts Organization for Addiction Recovery (MOAR) delivered the letter to key lawmakers. With over 100 organizations standing united, our collective voices are sure to command the attention of the legislature.

In addition, a legislative conference committee tasked with finalizing a substance use and recovery bill will meet for the first time next Tuesday. This is an important step forward, and we believe that our efforts, alongside those of many other advocates, will play a crucial role in shaping the outcome of these deliberations.

MASAM is proud to announce our support for the joint letter addressed to Chair John Velis of the Joint Committee on Mental Health, Substance Use and Recovery, advocating for the 51A reform concerning prenatal substance exposure. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Chair Velis for his leadership in drug policy and public health. His commitment to updating the state's approach to reporting prenatal substance use is commendable. Our coalition of organizations eagerly anticipates the enactment of these critical statutory changes this session. We urge Chair Velis to incorporate these vital reforms into any substance use disorder legislation the Senate considers in the final weeks of this session. Together, we aim to create a more compassionate and effective framework for addressing substance use and its impacts on families.
